Seminar on "Target IIT" by Mr. Shivakumar

A seminar for the parents and students of classes VII and VIII was taken by Mr.Shivakumar, Director (Academics), Indus World Schools and Founder Director, Career Launcher on Feb 13. What does it take to get into an IIT? What is the right age to start the preparation? How can we combine the child’s regular school and IIT preparation? These were some of the queries that counseling helped clarify to the parents.

Mr. Shiva Kumar felt that parents of students who are naturally inclined to Sciences and Math and have made up their mind on Engineering should definitely think of giving their wards the early start at class IX itself. For the rest it is worth waiting maybe till class XI. He also mentioned that there is no need for 6 hours a day schedule for 4 years to crack IIT JEE. A good grounding in concepts at the school is sufficient to enable this. So a well designed curriculum with able support from the teachers in class VIII and Class IX will ensure that there is no undue pressure on understanding concepts when the student comes to class XI. He clarified how the board exams are different from the JEE. Exit exams like the board exams test the student’s learning at school directly whereas the entrance tests check his ability to apply the concepts in a “new context”. That is what makes them tough. Maybe, IIT is the only test which needs to be focused on as early as class IX.

It was also announced in the session that a new IIT-JEE batch for class IX would be started at Indus World School, which will especially focus on IIT preparation for those who are seriously interested in IIT. Mr. Shivakumar has extended his stay in Indore, after getting a marvelous response. He would be available for one to one counseling sessions from 11:00am to 4:00pm on 14th and 15th Feb, for students preparing for IIT.

Seminar on "Sports as a serious career" & Indus Tennis Open Tournament

A panel discussion on ‘Can sports be a serious career for your child?’, was organized in the Indus World School, Chhawani campus on Feb 06, Sunday. It discussed the merits of sports as a career and parents’ role in encouraging students’ latent talents. The esteemed panel consisted of: Mr. Satyanaryanan, Chairman, Career Launcher; Mr. Vijay Dahiya, Ex Wicket keeper, Indian cricket team and assistant coach, Kolkata Knight Riders; Mr. Amay Khurasia, Ex Cricket player; Mr. Vinay Rishi, Vikram Awardee, Swimming champion and entrepreneur; Mr. Sushil Doshi, famous cricket commentator and Ms. Bindeshwari Singh, National level Squash player and Mentor, Indus World School.

Mr. Sujit Bhattacharya, the technological guiding force at Career Launcher and Indus World School, invited the panelists to share their journey and experiences in the field of sports. This provided interesting insights about their glories and debacles. Although it was difficult to succeed in the field of sports, it taught them to win with humility and lose with dignity. The sports field according to them is the best teacher of discipline, team spirit, time management and how to live life each day.

Questions put forward by parents were answered by the panelists and solutions offered to their queries. “Elbow grease is the best polish”, was quoted by them while emphasizing upon the importance of hard work. The panelists did stress upon the need to give equal importance to academics as well as sports. This was followed by the opening ceremony of the Indus Tennis Open Championship, which marked the inauguration of the newly constructed lawn tennis courts in the school.

The Indus Open Tennis Tournament started at Indus World School on Feb 7, 2011, a day after the inauguration by noted Cricketer and Coach Mr. Vijay Dahiya and other sports personalities, it is noteworthy that they enlightened parents and students on the prospects of sports as a career. Students from various clubs and schools across Indore participated. The enthusiasm and vigour of all the participants gave a very positive start to the tournament.

The tournament had four groups: Under – 15 boys, under – 12 boys, under – 15 girls and under – 10 boys and girls. The final matches were held on 11/02/11. The response to the tournament was tremendous, where more than 70 participants took part from across the city. The prize distribution happened on the same day. Prof.Aaditya Lohana, Director, Indus World Schools and Principal, Smita Rathore gave away the prizes to winners.

English Debate

On the 9th of February, the four houses sent their candidates to debate on two topics which are probably very close to every student's heart.
Jigyasa 1 students debated on 'Our school uniform should be changed' while the Jigyasa 2 and Sadhana 1 children debated on 'Homework should be made voluntary'.
The judges were Mrs. Bhavna Mulani and Ms. Bindeswari Singh.

At Indus World School, each class is not known merely by an alphabet like Section A, B or C. Each class has a meaningful name.

A section of Class V is called Purvai. The children wrote a song on what Purvai means to them and presented it in the morning assembly.

We both decided to make Purvai song as we were inspired by class 8 Vasant. When they made their Vasant song, we thought of making Purvai song.

Lyrics of this song were made in just one day only. We both felt proud. Before making this song we both thought that how can a class be a good class and our class got inspired from this song and yes there are many things in this song which we follow. We gave our 100% in making this song. We both also composed this song. We thank Tushita didi (Class VII Prachi) for her help in making the lyrics and Sunil sir and Bhagyashree maam for helping us in making this song much better. This was a really memorable experience.

Ever seen a bicycle with square wheels

In the Math Week celebrations at the school, one of the most intriguing sights was the Indus Square Wheel Bicycle. Most people were amazed to see the cycle. But making it was actually the easiest part. The difficult part was to design its road! It looks like a speed breaker, but has to be very accurate in terms of the shape and size of the curves.

Can you think of a road for a triangular wheels? And what if the triangle was not equilateral? What if it was a right-angled isosceles triangle?

There were quite a few interesting and exciting questions answered in the Math Week that we don't really come across in our Math books. But that's exactly what makes us so different in our approach, isn't it?

Celebrating Math: The Indus Math Challenge-2011

We believe in posing hard questions to ourselves, and Math is no exception. Last week we concluded our annual ritual of celebrating Math in our daily lives.

We will post a lot more about the Math week, but right now, it is time to throw the Math Challenge Test open to all of you. This written test was followed by a uniquely designed Active Learning Test (ALT). While the Written Test tested a student on the theory and its applications, the ALT combined Math with the real learning environment by asking students to "perform" Math. We will post the ALT components very soon.

The Indus Mentors

Famous 30 on a trip

That day, some exciting news awaited us...

Manjeet sir came in smiling and asked what if we were taken 1000 km away from the city?
wooo hooo EVERYONE shouted. With questions the class was crowded. We were curious to know where we were going and questions were thrown from each corner of the class. When the class was over, all were discussing about where we are going and the only word from every corner was the word 'trip'. All were excited. Wishing that we could go on the excursion as early as possible.
Then, a week later we got a circular about the excursion in which it was written that we were going for an excursion to Kolad on the Mumbai-Goa Highway. Again the babble broke out. Many started to jump around the class and then everybody started planning about the trip and forgot whether parents would allow them to go.
When they went back home and asked the parents, many were allowed to go but some weren't so next day when all children came back to school and discussed who was coming and who was not coming there were around 6 to 10 children who weren't coming so we all children and Manjeet sir spoke to the parents and convinced them. Many still could not come. A lot of coaxing and cajoling later most were allowed. Sadly two of us weren't. :(
Finally, it was the day to leave for Kolad.

Already seven o' clock!!!
I have to pack!!!
Mom where's my comb?!!!
Where's my haversack?!!!
We were very excited and kept our moms busy helping us shop, pack, making dinner for us...
When the time came to say bye to our parents we reached school and met our friends and started planning what we will do in the bus and telling what we had got. Class VI was already coming with us. At the last moment, Class IX had also joined the bandwagon! (So, in reality, the title should read "Famous 60 on a trip")
We enjoyed in the bus eating chips and snacks (There was enough to start our own wholesale shop) When night fell, we had dinner and looking out the windows we had lots of bumps in our heads.
8:30 onwards began a slew of horror stories. All the lights were switched off to add to the effect. Thomson sir and Manjeet sir told us many horror stories and then there was no stopping even the children. 12:00'o clock midnight we all were trying to sleep but some naughty kids (and the ghosts from the stories) didnt let us sleep.
Once again began the series of another set of horror stories. And this time when the 'naughty kids' tried to sleep, no one allowed them to sleep! It was great fun! Sleep didn't come before 3-4 am.
In the morning we reached Pune and took another bus. All were tired of continuous travelling but still had the energy to play something. Around 4 in the evening, the bus stopped at Kashid beach and everyone had a dip in the sea and enjoyed a lot. We had snacks and took the bus and reached our camp. We crossed river Kundalika by boat and reached the camp and saw the beauty of the camp and relaxed. We changed our clothes and then were told to go to the open area where a 'mallkhamb' presentation was given. Then we had dinner and went to our cottages and dormitory. All slept peacefully. Well, almost because we were still full of energy and couldn't help making the most of being on our own with our friends.
Second day morning we met our friends from Raipur who had arrived late in the night. After breakfast we were divided into groups and then there were a range of activities lined up. Karate in which we got to know animals attacking postures. We went for river trail and saw the mango plants. Rivercrossing was what we enjoyed the most. We wished to stay in water for all time but sadly we could not. Next was a live interaction with snakes. In the evening one group did team work activity and another helped the gardener pluck vegetables.
In the night, it was time for campfire. In nine groups we prepared presentations. We walked through the night to reach the campfire. The presentations were a lot of fun. And they also conveyed the message of unity and oneness. We also made new friends with children from Raipur.
We had to leave early the next morning so we got down to packing our things after having dinner. It being the last night at the camp, sleep didn't come easily. We were awake till late in the night and yet we were up early. (I am sure our parents will find it a little difficult to believe) by 8 in the morning we were all set to go!
We were feeling bad also because we had enjoyed a lot. Again we crossed Kundalika. We exchanged phone numbers with the Raipur IWS friends and sadly said goodbyee to them and went to the bus. The spirits revived again in the bus and we started playing antaakshri. Our next stop was the Pepsi bottling factory. We saw how Pepsi is made and bottled. We also got to relish the aerated drink!
Two hours of bus journey later, we reached Jhanjira fort. Amazingly, Jhanjira fort is surrounded by sea on all sides. We went there on a sail boat. All sixty of us fit into one boat and reached there after 15 mins. We got to know a lot about that fort. It is said that it had India's 3rd biggest cannon. We even saw it.
Back in the bus on our way to Pune we played antakshri. This time it was a grade VI vs grade VII challenge. There were some special rules like not insulting or teasing during the game. Both the teams were also allowed to help each other. Antaakshri continued for more than 4 hours. It was at 12 midnight that we reached Pune.
We changed our bus for Indore. Some slept and some didnt sleep for the whole night. We played games and had a lot of fun. Before reaching Indore we all sang songs together and were feeling really bad that the trip was coming to and end. We reached school at 7 pm, eager to meet our parents but also longing to go to the camp again. We said goodbyes to our friends and went back home narrating our adventures of the trip.

Every time we try and divide a pizza between 5 friends or when estimating the painting budget of our homes, and of course when trying to calculate the required runs in a nail-biting cricket match, we need Math.

At Indus we believe that it is important to take math out of the textbook and connect it to the real life of children. We strive to help each child visualize and make concrete the abstract concepts of math, so that they appreciate and fully understand the concepts that they learn.

When connections are made, math can be fun and challenging rather than dull and scary.

Albeit a bit late for the post, I thought it better to post now than never!

INFINITY, the annual event at IWS, Indore, had to its credit a few firsts. We did the event at our new Campus at Jhalaria. It was held on 2 days for the first time, to ensure participation from all students (as is the norm at our school) while making the program short enough to endure the cold winter evenings.

The first day for Ananda group had the children taking the stage right from anchoring to showcasing their talent. Little children boldly coming on to stage to anchor their respective programs was a heartening sight. Mentors could be seen trying to motivate them all the time, while parents were busy shooting with their cameras. The pictures of the first day are available for viewing here.

The second day for Jigyasa and Sadhna groups witnessed children taking on the act more seriously than we could have imagined. The choice of programs, right from the Karate Show, Mime Act and Panna Dhay Play to the Art Finale reflected the Indus Way. Meet The Leader

3rd December was a special day at school. This time we had Ms. Vinita Dharm, a senior leader with the Indore Municipal Corporation, with us as part of the Meet the Leader programme. We were also awaiting the results of the election that we had participated in!

Ms. Dharm told us many things about the working of the Indore Municipal Corporation - how the members are elected and how they work. She told us about the A to Z company that is responsible for cleanliness in our city. She informed us about the call centre and how if we have a complaint and it is not taken care of, the concerned authority gets a penalty. The responsible person may also get a penalty on their salary. If the waste is not removed even after complaint the A to Z company would be fined Rs. 100 for each waste bin that was not cleaned.

Ms. Dharm told us the importance of paying the tax on time and the right amount. This tax money eventually helps us in our needs like roads and cleanliness etc.

Ms. Dharm was also a teacher earlier. She encouraged us to utilize our precious time.

Now was the time to announce the results of the election. This was done by the Election Commissioner Jayesh Bhawsar of class IX. And the winner was the contestant from the Indus Aristocrat Party - Jatin Bhawsar!!!

Ms. Dharm gave us the numbers that can be contacted if we have any problems related to any of the departments.

Class VIII

Elections!

As part of the chapter Electoral Politics in Social Science, Class IX conducted elections. These elections were as democratic as the actual process. Elections started with nomination of candidates. This happened keeping in mind the ratio of boys and girls in the class. Aman Tagore, Burhanuddin Khambati, Jatin Bhawsar and Vibhuti Thackar were nominated. The four parties were Allay Party, Ekta Party, Indus Aristocrats and Empowerment Party respectively. Each had supporters in the class and Jayesh Bhawsar was appointed the Election Commissioner.

As usual, the candidates with their supporters started campaigning and convincing people to elect them. (Some of us couldn't resist a bit of horse trading). The walls of the second floor were covered with posters and slogans for the elections.

Finally, the much awaited day arrived - 1st December! After the morning assembly, the candidates gave their speeches which were full of promises to make Indore and the country a better place. The day of the election also showed the main features of a democratic election - there was equality among all voters - class VI children's votes counted as much as the votes from class IX students which carried the same value as the votes given by our mentors. There was no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, colour, career or age (classes III to V did not vote though - they were underage for our elections!)

A very strict Election Commissioner ensured free and fair elections. There were four polling booths and at each booth the process went very smoothly.

Now, with bated breaths we await the result which will be declared on 3rd December.

Class IX

Futuremap Counselling

Indus World School is conducting one-to-one career counselling sessions for all students of the senior most Class IX. These sessions are based on the results of the FutureMap Test, a comprehensive career building and advisory program for school students. Each student had appeared for the elaborate 4 hour test spread over 2 days. This test from Career Launcher has helped students of Std. IX to XII from the best schools across the country choose a career best suited for them on the basis of their Aptitude, Personality and Interest.
The Principal, Mrs. Smita Rathore, said that FutureMap Test results were also validated with the class mentor, Mr. Thomson Verghese, and were found to be very accurate based on the children's observations. The career suggestions made on the basis of the report would help the children choose the right subject combination. During the counselling with parents of each child, they were also consulted about their own perceptions about their child's potential. Most parents said that they wanted their children to follow their dreams and were not putting any pressure of expectations. With a clearer roadmap in mind, the children would also be able to focus on their weekly and monthly learning objectives. This is in line with the school's recent initiative of inculcating leadership traits in the children right from Grade I. The programme lets students take charge of their learning, rather than let the school and curriculum decide it. The children are learning to set their own goals and keep track of the progress.
One of the parents, Mr. Sapan Bhattacharya father of Uttam Bhattacharya commented that it is rare to see such devotion and commitment in a school Principal when they were counselled till 7:30pm. He also mentioned that he felt very confident and reassured that his son, who had been suggested a career in law, will now find the right direction to move ahead.
Quite a few students were highly motivated to realize their tremendous hidden potential, though they may not have shown academic prowess. One such student's parents were convinced that hotel management was the perfect choice for their son, given his interest and aptitude for cooking and food production. Some of the students were also planning to take up performing arts as a serious career choice. They were provided with a detailed career book as per their suggested career choice. This book provides information about all the options within a career choice, and the list of institutions where this choice is offered.
The FutureMap Test is also offered online at http://www.futuremap.in/ for Rs. 2,500, but is administered free to all Indus World School students.

Greetings!

School is back into action after Diwali break with lots of cheer and gusto!

I am happy to share with you that we have started a practice in school which will help our children to become emotionally stronger and more self disciplined.

This practice is called quality circle time- QCT. Although we have been practicing QCT from the beginning with our children but now we have made it more formal and included in the class time table of each class.

Every Thursday will be QCT time for Nursery to Class V. Classes VI to IX will have QCT on every Monday and Tuesdy..

The purpose and the outcome of this practice…

Purpose of QCT –

To create a culture where all adults and children relate to each other in honest and enjoyable ways and learn to listen to each other and build a sense of ownership in the entire school community.

To help everyone to ‘know thyself’ and understand ones own strengths and weaknesses.
To develop the skills of Thinking, seeing/observing, concentrating, listening and speaking

Outcomes of QCT –

Practicing democratic processes to celebrate success and solve issues of concern.
Developing ability to respect differences
Motivation and willingness to share thoughts and feelings,
Learning to receive and give feedback
The practice will initiate collective responsibility for the promotion of self-esteem and positive behaviour.
It will establish a forum where children can help one another.

Buddy's Day

Indus World School celebrated Children's Day in the form of Buddy’s Day in an innovative way. Children of Classes I and above brought their "buddies" to school with them. All children thoroughly enjoyed the fun-filled activities at school. Children were very happy to take their friends around the school to show them all the classrooms and activity rooms. The class mentors performed skits and dances, played games and asked the children to share their experiences at the end of the program.
For classes I to III, there were various one minute games where in children had to pick up marbles and beans from their toes and gems from chopsticks, balancing matchsticks on a bottle horizontally placed on the table. They especially enjoyed their time on the adventure zone at the school, where they had to complete a track full of physical activities like running, crawling, jumping and climbing on ropes.
The senior children of classes IV to IX participated in outdoor group activities to develop their team skills. In classroom, after the introduction, importance of “OM” was shared. Everyone shared some positive points about their buddies. There was a closure time in the end for all classes, where everyone shared their thoughts about how did the day go. It was a great fun for the children. Everyone was given a Graduation cap in the end.

Classes VI and VII went to Jogi- Bhadak on 8th August. This water fall is located in Manpur. It was really a trek full of fun, enjoyment and excitement. In bus we played antakshri, we sang a lot of songs. When we reached Manpur it was around 11:30. When we started the trek, at first we saw a lot of mint (podinhara) planted around. Then some of my friends and I started to collect some stones present over there. The one which I picked up looked like a crystal! On some stones fungus was also there. Then as we moved beyond, I was very scared because the area seemed a bit dangerous also. But our mentors were with us and they guided us. Then we stopped in between for some rest and to have lunch. At lunch time we were feeling very hungry. We had brought our own food and some of us had already started finishing our lunch boxes while we were still walking!. After lunch we walked for some more time and then we were almost near the river. Then the real fun began. Within no time, all of us were in the river, splashing water at each other. We had a lot of fun in the river. We continued playing in the river for nearly three hours and then we changed and came back to the school, this time also we were busy playing antakshari in the bus. One lesson that I did learn is that I need to be both mentally and physically strong. This was a good test of my stamina and endurance.

4th August - a very auspicious day, the birth of Kishore da. Class 8 Vasant got the golden opportunity to visit Indore Christian College, where Kishore da got his higher education. He made some of his wonderful songs in the college itself which are very well known. He dedicated his life for music and became a famous personality in the world. When we went there, an uncle guided us and told whatever he knew about Kishore Da. In a room all his memories were reserved with the help of some clippings, cutouts, photos and many more things. Few of my classmates got the opportunity to sing with Srichand uncle. He was a person in college who immitated and admired him for what he was. After all these plesant things, media came and captured those wonderful moments.While the media was on their job, the principal came and gave him honour by saying few words about him.

I would like to wind up by saying that we are looking for some more such golden opportunities.

TRIP TO PANCHPRAPAT

On Sunday 25th July we went for a trek. We all were ready and were waiting to go to the place known as Panchprapat. We left our school at around eight in the morning and reached there at eleven. On the way to our destination we crossed the Army School. We sang songs all over and had fun. When we reached there we were assigned some numbers. All of us started our journey... we came across a river...the breeze was very cold, cooler than ACs. We named it "Natural AC". Than we moved ahead and saw the model of a dam. Than we entered a forest of Eucalyptus. In our journey we came across many big puddles. Thomson sir gave us challenges and we tried to meet those challenges. It was complete fun.Then we crossed a river, which was real adventure.

At last we reached a place where we needed a strong foot grip to cross a mountain which was very slippery. Finally we reached the beautiful, incredible waterfall.The fall was hitting the rocks hard. The sound it made was musical and the scene nostalgic.

This was experience of the life time... I can never forget it.

I had this unexpected occasion to spend some time without a fixed agenda in the class, due to lot of students of the class busy in a football match. Rejecting their requests for playing outside, I asked them to show me some creativity. The task was to "draw" words that could convey the meaning of the words too. A few examples could be as shown here.

Initially, the children seemed to be struggling with the designs. But gradually, they caught on the task, and here are some creations that I could capture. In fact, it was difficult to keep up with their pace. Of course, there were some that bordered on being highly cryptic to be deciphered. There were still others that were not original creations. Reward: A game of Pen-Fight

Television for children at home

As a mentor, and a parent, I am always intrigued with the discussions revolving around the TV viewing habits of our children. Parents always lament on the excessive time their children spend in front of the idiot box. Invariably, their complaint is about the quality and quantity of programmes. Pre-teens are usually seen engrossed in cartoon shows that seem to be a nuisance to an adult mind. Teenagers, on the other hand, prefer reality shows and film-based programmes.

As a mentor believing in the code of "free-will", I would want to give the child freedom to choose. The only way to achieve this to give the child viable choices. If the parents give a child an alternative like "Do your homework" or "Read a book" to TV, the child doesn't seem to have a comparable choice to the TV show. How then do we expect the child to happily accept the not-so-good choice? Even if the child goes into her room to study, her ears will always be craving for the sound coming out of your favourite soap on TV. More so, her mind will also be questioning the unfair treatment from an adult human being to a child human being.

Now try this: Just start doing a "real experiment" in the room next to the TV room with your door open. If you are like I am, you would find it difficult to creatively think of a ingenious experiment. No fret! Just browse for some exciting stuff on the net, and you can just start by "copying" something off the net. One of my favourite starters is creating a volcanic eruption by mixing some vinegar, floor and baking soda. You can do the experiment in the lawn to give it a more natural touch. When I did this one the first time, my children didn't even seem to acknowledge the presence of the TV. You could get some really cool ideas from sites like www.instructables.com and www.thereifixedit.com.

The bottomline is: If you want your children off the TV set, do it yourself first. Do something together and you would have given your children a "viable" choice.

A phenomenal way to learn about Pyramids!

Did you ever wonder how were the Great Pyramids built? Were they built top down, or bottom up? Inside out, or Outside first? How did they manage to move tons of building material to the right place in those times? Did the Egyptians have the kind of engineering and architectural knowledge to make these astounding structures?

I came across this great site that beautifully tries to answer these questions using 3D graphics. The theory is by Jean-Pierre Houdin, and I believe a student will definitely learn more from this than a history textbook.

Countdown to the new Session

We didn't realize it, but the holidays are almost over. Its been a hectic period of work to be done at the school, to make it ready for the new session. The first set of parents arrived at the school yesterday and today for an orientation session.

The parents, especially those of the newly admitted students, wear that curious and apprehensive look on their faces. They are probably too much under the pre-conditioned impressions of a school atmosphere. An atmosphere where the Principal is that stern-looking woman/ man who doesn't want to be disturbed or talked to. Where the teachers want the parents to behave as if they have committed a grave mistake bringing up their children till date.

Thankfully, at our school, it was just a matter of the first impression that changed the perspective. The informal seating arrangement followed by an introduction to the group put them at ease with each other. Though some of the parents surely got a little psyched with the "Expectations from the Parents" slide, it didn't really make them unduly alarmed. There was an understated balance between what was expected from the parents and what would be delivered from the school.

There were, of course, a few concerns by parents about the buses not coming to their doorstep, and hence causing inconvenience. But these, I guess, are healthy regular requests that can be resolved amicably. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have highly understanding parents with us.

Last, and the most important bullet point about the session beginning this month. We have decided to go paperless in the true sense, when it comes to our school communication. If I remember correctly, we sent more than 50 sheets of paper to each parent last year! That's about 17,500 sheets or 35 reams sent to you. As per conservatree.com, it takes one tree to make 17 reams. That's 2 trees last year! With the number of students going up, we are bound to kill more trees this year. So we decided to do something about it. This year onwards, we will communicate only through the SIS, Email, sms and phones.

Please do your bit in saving our trees. Better still, plant a few in the city too. Indore surely could do with more trees!

As the year ends - the school, the mentors and the children everybody looks forward for their annual function. Our annual function "Infinity" was also being awaited eagerly by all.
Though the program was scheduled for 17th Apr 10' in the evening at 6:00 but its enthusiasm was visible all around the corridors, long before.
As usual our children were also involved in organising the event. The program commenced at the scheduled time with shlokas and saraswati vandana, followed by a speech from our Principal Mrs. Smita Rathore.Then there was a skit followed by a dance of "ananda" children.
Then came our little friends of nursery to present a rajasthani folk dance. It was a wonderful sight to see the nursery kids performing. Most of them were busy searching for their parents amongst the audience, and all those who could manage to see their parents, started their conversation from the stage itself.
Then were several folk dances, like "bamboo dance", "giddah" and skits like "Foolish Rabbit" and "Chanakya". For these dances the songs were sung by the children, music was managed by the children, compering and stage co-ordination was also done by the children.
Watching children of classes 6,7 and 8, doing so well, gave a great sense of achievement.What else could one expect from the children of this age?
Organising and managing an event at this age... taking responsibility of making their event a success... is a big thing. Most of us, even now will think twice before taking such a big responsbility.

Do you think that these qualities, this confidence... can be taught through books? Do you think you'll find it in any curriculum?
No! all this comes when you believe in your children... When you give them freedom... Freedom even to make mistakes, when you apreciate your children for what they are, and do not bully them for what you want them to be...
That is why Indus World School says "know thyself"...

How imaginative a child can be...

This is an elephant that has been made by one of our students Baladitya Rane of class 2. This has been made by the scraps of paper, left out by one of the didis who was making paper flowers for art & craft. This boy came and within split of a second he made an elephant with bits of paper.

Indus World School, Indore Class 7 and 8 students participated in the National Olympiad for Science, English , Maths and Cyber conducted by Eduheal Foundation. The results, as expected, were very encouraging indeed. A snapshot summary of the reaults:

ALL students of Indus have scored 90%ile plus in ALL tests. In other words, our lowest performer is in the top 10% of the country!
Out of 35 students of class 7 and 8 who took the 4 tests, we have 21 instances of a National Merit Certificate being awarded.
We have 4 Top 10 state rank instances.

My Son

I was going for my first outbound and my son saw the photographs of an outbound which took place earlier. He got scared about the risk involved in the activities and was tense, as I don’t know how to swim. I tried to explain and took him into confidence but he was little upset. In the evening when I asked him something, he shouted at me, which I did not like. I just told that we would talk when he would be in a good mood. Saying this I left him alone to think. After a short while he came and said sorry to me. I told him that I was not expecting an apology from him but simply wanted him to think about the temper he had thrown. The next thing that I had from him was a letter to me in which he had written, ‘Dear mummy, sorry (many times), mujhe maaf kar do.’ This way he wrote seven letters handing them over to me again and again. He kept on saying to his grandparents, “Mein likhte jaaonga jab tak Mummy maaf nahi kar degi”. Finally he came with a sorry note pasted on his forehead with the help of a tape. Looking at that I burst into laughter and hugged him-my son had learnt to respect my feelings now.

Grandparents' Day at Indus World School!

Grand Parents’ Day was celebrated in Indus World School today. This day was celebrated by classes Nursery to Class II and the activities were conducted classwise. In all the classes, children performed several activities like dance, role-play and songs. In some classes grandparents took the initiative in creating cards as tokens of love for their grandchildren. It was indeed a very exciting experience to watch some of the Dadajis, dadijis, nanajis and nanijis to enter the class with animal masks on their faces and in some classes they also shared stories, songs and their experiences. In one of the classes, the grandparents went out of the way to touch a child’s heart by attending his class as his grandparents since his own grandparents were not present!

Our Principal, Mrs. Smita Rathore, said that Indus World School believes in creating a learning environment by involving the child’s own world of parents, grandparents, and friends for a holistic growth and development. It is very rare that we acknowledge the contribution of our loved ones in our day-to-day life. Hence we took this opportunity to thank the grandparents on behalf of the children by making them perform activities of their choice.

This is what we call ‘Building relationships’ and strengthening them with bonds of love and gratitude!

Ananda Olympics...

“Ananda Olympics”… What is this? The name suggests it has something to do with sports, and as it is sports and ananda (joy) is synonymous.
From today, we have organized some sports activities for children of Ananda group that is from Nursery to Class II at Indus World School.
The event began with the inauguration, by the children of Ananda group. Children ran around the school with colorful ribbons in their hands. It was such a wonderful sight, some children ran…some stopped in the way… and some preferred to opt for a short cut.
After this the children were taken to the ground where they were divided into four groups.Then began race, relay and many more wonderful activities designed by our Baghel sir and Vishnu sir.
The event will continue for one more day.
Looking forward for much more fun and excitement on the ground.

Save the basic necessity of life...

Our motherland is so rich in natural resources and has plentiful water. Yet, India and in large our world is facing the water problems since many years. The crises today is not about having too little water to fulfill our needs, but the crises is of managing water.

The availability of safe drinking water is being reduced due to pollution from sewage and industrial waste.

Considering the importance of water, we at our ends should make the optimum utilization of this precious resource. A little we can do is, to make it a practice to save water as and where it is possible, in our daily routine.As we are the role models for our children, we will be able to pass on this habit to them also.

With a festival like “Holi” around it becomes all the more important to make our children aware of the importance of this basic necessity of life. It becomes our duty to see that we do not waste water on this occasion because after “Holi” are the months in which we face the highest water crises.
Don’t you think, that it is high time that we become serious about this most essential necessity of life?

When my son left us speechless...

When I had joined Indus as a mentor, my son was studying in another school. In my first PMM (Parents- Mentors Meet) I got feedback from the parents about the change, which they observed, in their children. These feedbacks made me think about my son. I had never given this kind of feedback to my son’s teacher; nor had I observed those changes in my son, which the parents at Indus were talking about. There was nothing happening beyond counting, alphabet and writing. I immediately took a decision to get my son enrolled in Indus.
Session started; initially he studied the same syllabus, which he had already covered in the previous year in the conventional school although in a different manner. My relatives started commenting “Yeh to already padh chuka hai”. As days passed by my son became more understanding; he became more caring towards all the family members. He properly understood the concepts; he became more observant and more inquisitive. He enjoyed every minute in the school and did not want to go back home. Day by day he kept surprising us with one or the other thing. Eventually one fine day he astonished all the family members by reading the whole “Durga chalisa” in one go. We all were speechless.Indus has brought along many qualitative changes in him indeed.

Fear is F-false; E-evidence; A-appearing; R-real.

All of us face many ups and downs in life, but standing up after every failure is a way to defeat our fear. We all have some or the other kind of fear, fear of losing, fear of being lonely, some or the other fear which is in there in our minds and which is always a hurdle in achieving sucess.

When we want to achieve something we just have to be very clear, confident,comfortable with our efforts rather than thinking what would happen if we don't succeed? When we give our performance with these 3 C's we will definitely be able to beat our fear and be successful.

Science Meet

Recently we've had a science meet. It started on 27th January and ended on 29th of January. In these 3 days we did many things and we really enjoyed them a lot!!!Classes III toVIII participated in the science meet.

DAY ONE

The subject of the first day was Wonderful Experiments. In that day we were asked to do experiments which were written on the paper given to us by Jyoti ma'am and Shilpa ma'am. On that day children were busy doing their project such as making simple motor , D.C motor , jumping frog etc. Some were successful and some were unsuccesful in making their project.
DAY TWO
The topic for the second day was 'Our Own Experiments'. In that we made our own groups and we did our experiments. We were asked to make our models 3days before, but still many friends were unable to prepare it in that period of time, so Jyoti ma'am gave us extra time of two hours. After two hours many friends were still not ready with their projects, so Jyoti ma'am asked those friends who had made their projects, to present them. The experimets were based on volcano , motor boat , windmill etc. But class sixth was not able to make their projects, so we were asked to present our projects the next day.
DAY THREE
On 3rd day we made our own groups and made posters related to 'Save Environment' as it was a poster making contest. Children really worked hard and made beautiful posters. Then we presented our experiments which were pending.

Republic Day

It was a pleasant morning…there was something special about this morning…everybody was excited and some preparations were going on in the school…Yes it was Republic Day! and its presence could be felt everywhere.
As usual this event was also being handled by the children. Our two young anchors Sajal and Ishita gave a brief introduction of republic day and shared the importance of this auspicious day. The program started with the hosting of flag by Principal and recitation of our National Anthem. Then followed a Bengali song by the children of class VIIth .After the melodious song was a small skit on the life of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar . The audience was spell bound and was completely engrossed in the act.
This was the best occasion to appreciate the participants and the winners of the sports week. So these children were awarded certificates.
Principal Ms. Smita Rathore and Mr. Tushar Tamhane also addressed the children. Mr.Tushar Tamhane told about the importance of hard work where as Ms. Smita Rathore shared the importance of following rules with there is freedom.
The program ended with a wonderful skate dance which took away our breaths.
I’m sure this short and meaningful program left our young citizens with many points to ponder and will help them to make their community a better place to live.

Sport's Meet

A three day sports meet got over on Wednesday, 13th Jan 2010.It was a great experience for the children. The principal of IWS Indore, Smita Rathore inaugurated the sport’s meet, by lighting a lamp. Children were divided into four groups- ‘Bose’, ‘Azad’, ‘Bhagat Singh’ and ‘Mangal Pandey’. The house leaders took the oath and proceeded for the event.
Full enthusiasm was visible on the grounds. Not only the children but also the mentors were full of energy and were involved in all the games. We could see some cheering for Kho-Kho, some busy with cricket scores and some watching football.
There were slight changes in the schedule on Wednesday due to rains on Tuesday night, but there was no change in the enthusiasm and excitement of the children.
The event went off successfully and it was a good learning experience for the children.

हर प्रयास सफल हो ये आवश्यक नहीं है। लेकिन प्रयास में कोई कमी नहीं हो ये सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है। शिव खेडा के अनुसार किसी भी कार्य की सफलता या असफलता उसके लिए किये गए प्रयासों पर निर्भर करती है।
मेरा विश्वास है की अगर प्रयास निरंतर और मध्यम रहे तो सफलता सदैव साथ रहेगी।

Satya and Iti with parents...

“Parents need more counseling than children do” – said Dr. Itishree Mishra, a renowned child psychologist in a seminar with parents on 28th Dec 09’. We need to know the interests of children rather than imposing our expectations on them. The topic for the seminar was “Parenting the Children of Information age”. Dr. Mishra said that we should not overlook the feelings of a child. She suggested that our conversation with the children should be according to their age. We cannot expect them to be adults all of a sudden. She also said, that if there is some behavioral problem with the child, we need to look for the reason at home or with the parents, rather than blaming the child for it. Parents have to work in synchronization with school for the betterment of the child.

Next day on 29th Dec 09, the facilitator of the seminar was Chairman of Career Launcher- Mr. Satya Narayan.R. The Seminar was on “How to help your children to achieve their Dream Career”. Reminding the parents of their childhood he said that we had limited career options with us, either to be a doctor or to be an engineer. We had no options but to fit in the frame provide to us. We could not do anything which was of our interest or which fascinated us. We should now give that freedom and support to our children to achieve their dream career.

Christmas Celebrations

Since morning there was celebrations in air. All the children were very enthusiastic about their event and were busy preparing for it. We could see little Santas ans Marys everywhere. Soon all of us gathered for the celebrations. The programme started a dance of little buds of nursery, which was fun to watch. Then there were carols, role-plays, quizes and lots of stuff. Finally the certificates were awarded to children of Jigrasa group, who participated in extempore held on 19th dec 09’. The programme ended with recitation of “Jingle Bells”. There was a little Santa to distribute chocolates to children… we could see a smile on every child’s face…which was a big enough reason for all of us to be happy.

Spontaneous Role-Play

A wonderful thing which took place today was the spontaneous role- play that was enacted by Lubna and Jia, students of my class, PPII Hans. Seeing a couple of solo performances, Lubna came up to say that she and Jia wanted to perform a role-play in the assembly. As I asked her what the role-play was about, she answered that it was about ‘Christmas’. So I took them in front of the children and announced that they wanted to present a role-play before them, with no idea whatsoever of what they were going to present. To my astonishment, there was Lubna, saying ‘Kitna achchha din hai!’ and Jia responding to her in some manner. Again Lubna said, ‘Chalo, hum burf se khelte hain!’ and she pretended forming an ice ball and throwing it on Jia. Jia, taking clue, did the same. Then Jia came up to say, ‘Oh humein gifts mile hain!’ They sat down and again Lubna showed a flower with her hand saying ‘Oh mujhe flower mila hai!’ on which Jia said, ‘Oh mujhe Barbie mili hai!’ Saying, ‘Chalo sote hain!’ Lubna tried to conclude the role play at last. It was so exciting that it gave me goose pimples then and even now I cannot help smiling and feeling great about it!

Our Experience at Science Exhibition

We started our field trip for science exhibition on 2nd Dec 09’ in the morning at 10:00.As soon as we reached there, we got the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Vijay Bhatkar and Dr. Vasu. After the lecture we went to see different models that were there in the exhibition. One of them was named NREGA. The purpose of this model was to explain the process in which government provides job opportunities to uneducated farmers. Then we saw mind-blowing robots- one, which worked on Solar Energy, another had sensors and one was The Mechanical Moon Walker; equipped with antennas. It was all so new and exciting for us.
We also went to Taramandal. It was very nice. We learnt to recognize different constellation of stars.
After that it was time for which we waited eagerly. It was the time to interact with Dr. Bhatkar at Dainik Bhaskar Press Complex. Dr. Bhatkar is the first Indian to invent a Super Computer –‘Param’. He leads a team of engineers at CDAC. We all were bubbling with questions, like- why did he name his super computer ‘Param’? What was he like when he was a child? and so on. He answered to all our queries very patiently.
At the end he asked, “ What is it that a Computer can’t do?” To which one of our friends Amrita answered that “It cannot be a Human”. This answer of hers' made Dr. Bhatkar very happy.
It was a lifetime experience for all of us to interact with Dr. Bhatkar.

A Musical Morning...

We were fortunate to have Shri Dilip Mungi, a disciple of Pt. Jasraj amongst us. Shri Govind Potdhan accompanied him on Harmonium and Shri Balmukund Rao on Tabla.The session was held on classical music for the children of classes 5,6 and 7. The session started with recital of mesmerizing morning ragas by Shri. Dilip Mungi, followed by raag Malkaus on harmonium and tabla played by Shri Govind Potdhan and Shri Rao. The session left the entire children and mentors spell bound. During the session Shri Potdhan also informed children about several ragas and instrument. He also informed children about our renouned vocal classical singers. The session came to an end by bhajan "Shree Ram Chandra Kripalu Bhajman.." which was sung by children with Shri Mungi.

Chote Sikander in Town...

Indus World School with 94.3 My FM is organizing an event, Chote Sikander.This event is a competition to identify,encourage and felicitate children who possess high talent in the area of academics,sports and entertainment. To identify them, Indus World School has organised community level events events in 18 different colonies for 18 days.
In this event, 5 champions or Chote Sikander will be identified from each locality. Children will be divided in two categories based on their age groups.
Group 'A' Masti Ka Sikander will be from the age of 2.5 yrs to 6 yrs and Group 'B' from the age of 7 yrs to 11 yrs will have three set of activities- Padhai ka Sikander to identify the aademic talent,Khel ka Sikander to search for talents in sports,Hansi ka Sikanderto look for the children who have the talent to make people laugh.
The event commenced on 22nd Nov. will continue till 9 th Dec

DON'T SAY "NO" TO A CHILD

On 23rd nov. IWS parents and mentors got an opportunity to interact with renowned psychologist, school development consultant and head of Shikshanter schools Mr. Sunil Batra. He shared his experiences and answered the queries of the parents.
He shared that saying no to a child is the most detrimental to her growth. Instead of saying no to touch hot tea...tell her where to touch it from. Open her mind---a tree doesn't have to be only brown and green.

Failure is a result of our upbringing, not due to books and schooling. Teach her how to reason, and reason with her, not just saying “no” to everything. Confidence and trust- can only happen when you give time, not being busy emotionally, psychologically and physically.

A parent had a query about how to bring up the child when the parents are working, and don't have time for the child. To which he replied that- one parent should be working less hours. even upto 18 yrs of age! later ages- even then the child needs the parent in the background. It is possible to work from home now with IT. If you have brought a child in the world, you should make sure that you bring her up in the right way. Men too can take care of the child now, since they can also now work from home. Grandparents can be a good support system, but the parents have to settle and compromise on certain things in the interest of the child. Joint families are the best environment.

Children like to read stories, and they shouldn't be kept off the books due to fear of getting torn. They learn from what the parents do at home, the way they read and handle paper and pencil. There is a meaning in what they scribble..."this is my name", and then show him how to write her name. Then she will identify the letters visually.

Not saying no doesn't mean that you can't say no to anything. She has to take enough sleep time (9 hours) and break from play. Parents will have to sacrifice habits like TV so that they can spend time with the child.

Let a child commit mistakes...and correct them. This will make them learn new things. Don’t expect them to be perfect from the beginning...even the parent was not perfect. It is probably the effect of advertisements and hoardings that show the perfect child.

Akkad, bakkad bambey bo is one of the best rhymes that touches math, language etc.Cinema halls are not for children. Loud volume and large screen is not for the child. Like in the school at Indus World School, you will have to create the right environment at your home too, that will not scare off a child.

Inferiority complex in children is a result of non-availability of the right space. Don’t ask them to emulate you, which will make them under confident. He is not your shadow. Don’t put pressure on the child on even things like how much to eat, and when. Child may not have developed a taste for a certain fruit. So just make sure that she eats what she likes.

Don’t make the child eat something as blackmail. MSG is addictive that is available in every canned food. Don’t eat junk food more than once a week, and make the rule for yourself too.

Uniform in a school....doesn't have to be for any class! Indus doesn't have uniform till Class 2, but I am associated with a school that doesn't have a uniform till class 12. Don’t over clothe them. Let them wear cloths that will allow them to breathe. Good doctors tell you- make them wear the same number of layers as you are wearing. This will make them become more resistant.

Marks are not important. Rewards and punishments are the worst forms of education. It was used on dogs training. It was used when people had to be sent into wars, and they had to be forced to follow rules. How many times we ask a child as to whether he has understood or not, and where he hasn't understood. We don't have patience to listen to the child. We need to really work hard, just as the mentors work hard at Indus.

A parent shared that her child was made to take a test in KG, which put her off, and hence she decided to get her admitted in Indus. What if she gets transferred? She wondered if the govt should make a rule that there shouldn't be having tests for primary classes at least. Mr. Batra said that there are now some schools in most cities that follow this philosophy. But there aren't enough bold educators to take these steps. The parents should continue to expect this kind of education wherever they go. They should constructively put pressure on the schools to change themselves.

Most parents like to put children into an "assured" system, and not take risks. Parents should ask themselves why they want their child to get educated. Is it for career and earning potential, or is it for marks?

CBSE has been trying to introduce changes for 15 yrs, but only now Kapil Sibbal is trying to take those bold steps.

Children learn Zidd from the parents. Reason it out for any kind of demand. If you promise the child that you will give that toy tomorrow. Make sure that you do that the next day; otherwise it will grow up into more intense problems. "Delayed gratification" is the right way to handle Zidd.

Parents only write in forms that they watch NG and Discovery. Actually, the children keep watching Tom & jerry and then try it out in the class and home, and become aggressive. Another major reason is the conflicts among the parents. Children try to say something, and if you lose patience in her stammering, you will lose her trust

Comparison and inequitable treatment among siblings, unfair treatment in class and under confidence in children are reasons for aggression too.

No two children are alike. Don’t compare. Its a very bad way of teaching differences. Try to highlight the positive things in the child, not the weaknesses. Teach children to compete with themselves, not with others. Human beings are made to collaborate, not compete meaninglessly. Sachin Tendulkar wouldn't have achieved what he did by worrying about competing with Gavaskar. He doesn't take phone calls one hour before his match. That’s his dedication.

We need to understand that everyone can do well, not just the topper! Don’t worry about what your child will do in a longer term. There is enough space for everyone, if you do what you like to do.

Don’t undermine your children and yourself. Even if you think you are not showing it to her, you may still be passing on your thoughts to her unknowingly.

Boys and girls are different not because they are, but because we expect them to behave in a certain way.

Lets bring back the crowds to our Zoo!

A group of Grade 6 and 8 students went to the Zoo today to see how we could contribute to the betterment of the Zoo. There are some people who are very happy with the news that the two elephants will be moved out of the zoo soon due to a government regulation. The argument in favour of this move is that the elephants need more than an acre of land to move around. Since our Zoo doesn't have that space, these old friends have to move out. For us, it was ironical, since we could see large tracts of usable land inside the premises.

Why can't we then make this land usable for these majestic elephants, and let them be with us?

We also looked at the other animals' and birds' enclosures. The rains had made them all damp, and there was water leakage from the roof. So we decided to donate all the old flex banners to the zoo, so that they could be spread them on the roof tops. We hope we can get some more stuff like wooden planks and more flex for the zoo.

The best part of the visit, of course, was the way the Vet Uncle gave us a close (literally) look at the turtles, white tiger and the hippo. Would you believe it, we could touch them? He told us a lot of things about the animals like that Hippo eats up almost 300 kgs of food everyday! Wow, what a diet! But looking at its size, it seems quite reasonable:)

On 15th November 2009, Sunday, we had the Launch Ceremony of our new school campus at Jhalaria. Because of heavy reain, we had our function at Anand Mohan Mathur Auditorium. Mr. Harsha Bhogle and his wife Mrs. Anita Bhogle were our chief guests. Our Founder Satya sir and Chairman Sujit sir were also present.
Mr. Harsha Bhogle lighted the lamp and our school choir sang Saraswati Vandana. Our dancers performed dances from different parts of India. We also had an interaction with Mr. Harsha Bhogle. We asked him many questions and he answered them very happily.
After the programme we returned to school. After having lunch, Mr. Harsha Bhogle interacted with the mentors. Later, in the afternoon, ten students accompanied Mr. Harsha Bhogle to Dainik Bhaskar. We were invited as guest editors.
We enjoyed very much. It was a memorable experience.

31st October was a very lucky day for all of us since we all got the rare privilege to hear eminent personalities from different walks of life. The speakers were those who had scripted success stories in their own right by their sheer grit, determination and their eye for the unusual. It was astonishing to see them nurture their passions so unbelievably!! As they say, make your passion your profession and you will evade the boredom from your lives! This seemed quite true for some of the young entrepreneurs who spoke to us that day.

Mr. Mahendra Joshi, in his true signature style flagged off the programme by giving brief introductions of the guests. He expresses agony on the injustice being done to our national language Hindi because of the local flavours and how it is affecting even the likes of teachers which will eventually reflect in our students. He gave tips on the correct usage and also some etiquette to be kept in mind henceforth in the wake of such programmes so that the take away from such sessions grows manifold.

The first speaker was Mr. Manveer Singh who is a native of Indore, and with his vision of providing grooming and adventure sport facilities to the youth and school children of Indore, spoke of his new assignment. It is a resort located about eighty kilometers from Indore with excellent adventure sport facilities like rope traverse, rappelling, commando training for beginners and the like. It was a virtual tour as he took us through some pictures of a camp that was conducted recently. His enthusiasm was so contagious that all of us were compelled to think of an outbound training camp for mentors in the same area.

“Service with a smile”-SWAS, this is the cornerstone of the hospitality industry”, said Mr. Saurabh Dawra, owner of the Crown Palace Hotel in Indore. He spoke of his passion for cooking and the various aspects that make cooking much more than a perfunctory activity. He said that cooking is a science and the recipes are the formulae. He answered queries of most of us with a ‘smile’. He voiced concern about the apathy of the municipality with respect to disposal of the food waste.

Guru Vishnu Chinchalkar’s contribution to the world of art is known to all residents of Indore. His son is also a patron of art and the various manifestations of it, if one could put it metaphorically. Dileep Chinchalkar, who carries forward his father‘s legacy was the next speaker. The austerity, of this ‘man with a few words’ was the most striking element of his personality. He began with his stints in Australia and England and compared and contrasted the situations to those in India. That hedges were such a phenomenon was made aware to us by his stupendous narration of his quest for the hedges and the quest of a Briton named Roy Moxham and their mutual acquaintances that followed. The hedges of yore were a small ecosystem where flora and fauna could co-exist in harmony. These have been replaced by concrete walls which have also made us lead the ‘upwardly mobile’ vegetative lifestyles. The gravitas in this gentleman’s personality left everyone spellbound!

Dr. Premlata Parekh who is a renowned paediatrician of Indore, was the next speaker. She invited everyone to the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Chacha Nehru Hospital for children which is the first and the largest childrens’ hospital in Indore under the Government. She explained that a series of workshops will be conducted in connection with this and the one on “Behavioural Disorders’ will be of help to mentors in particular, given the escalating stress levels in children owing to academic expectations from parents.

The determination of a woman can bring about changes in the lives of a thousand women. Mrs. Janak Palta McGillian is a testimony to this. She and her husband Jimmy Mcgillian have worked together for the Tribal Welfare Initiative. The Barli Development Institute for Rural women under her stellar leadership aims at empowering the human resources especially woman who are the central pillar to the development of any country. Here, women are considered the assets and their talents are the capital. Mr. Jimmy Mcgillian has enabled the group to exploit solar energy and make the best use of it.

Our youth in general is losing the attachment to the heritage sites of Indore which mark the rich and pristine history associated with it. The Rajwada is one such example of neglect and ignorance. Mr. Vijay Choudhary, special correspondent of the popular daily “Patrika”, spoke of his campaign to spread awareness about preserving these monuments for posterity. Patrika has always carried features about the activities of our school. The Editor of the childrens’ magazine “Spectrum’, Mr. Kapil Pancholi was also present. It is a widely known fact that this magazine is also one of the favourites among children.

Wildlife is truly mesmerizing, but one needs to have an eye to understand it and appreciate the beauty it offers. The ace photographer of Indore and a bird lover, ardent traveler and the Photo editor of “Dainik Bhaskar”, Mr.Bhalu Mondhe also took us through an assortment of his photographs, most of which had been captured at the Sirpur Lake which throngs with migratory birds in the peak season. His team has been successful in restoring the required habitat for the birds to survive and breed in plenty. His body of work is so large that compressing it in a one hour talk was impossible but his snapshots were a glimpse of his genius.

The famous painter Mr. Vasant Chinchwadkar was also among the distinguished guests but he chose to speak on another occasion. His simplicity was amazing despite spending 40 years in London. It made us reflect on ourselves and understand the futility of material possessions against intellectual assets. A passionate teacher, Mrs. Vinita Dharm was also present to hear all the guests speak.

The talk ended by Mrs. Smita Rathore’s vote of thanks to all the guests for having made our day, one full of learning and enriching joyrides through this great gamut of life!!!

A welcome change!

Our HRD minister has recently announced many reforms in the examination system of our country. Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) “...to look at the holistic assessment of a learner which also includes co- scholastic area of Life Skills, Attitudes and Values, Sports and Games as well as Co-Curricular activities...”

It is quite reassuring to see that since the release of National Curriculum Framework 2005, by NCERT, the ministry is actually implementing the NCF -2005 through CBSE.

Hon’ble Union Minister for Human Resource Development also announced-
“Push the process of examination reform in accordance with NCF 2005. This will include making the Class X examination optional, thus permitting students continuing in the same school (and who do not need a board certificate) to take an internal school assessment instead.”

We at Indus are actually living the philosophy that NCF states or what the HRD minister is talking of now- ‘stress free education’.

“The term examination has come to be associated with stress and anxiety. The process of teaching and learning which is supposed to be meaningful for the student loses its joy because of these negative connotations of examination... The practice of declaring Compartment/ Fail shall be discontinued.”

At the same time, the launch of Career Development Cell at Indus will help in understanding the aptitude, interest in children and helping them in selection of subjects and careers.

“The larger context of education is to prepare futuristic citizens for a meaningful and productive life in a globalised society.”

It is very important that your child has a happy childhood and grows into a confident human being who knows herself/himself.

A New Vision

Nowadays I am looking at things differently than a common person! One day I woke up in the morning, rubbing my eyes I went into the balcony of my house and saw a man jogging. He was in his early forties. It was a Sunday and I was getting bored, so I thought of seeing this scene in a different way.

I started imagining that when the man might have been in his college, his physique might have been better. But, as time passed, he might have been married. After his studies he must have planned of enjoying his life a bit. So he might have gone on vacations and eaten fatty food because of which he became fat. One day his wife might have gone through his photo albums in which he might have been fitter! Maybe a discussion happened between the two of them that it is an alarming situation since he was becoming fat and had the risk of getting diseases. So there might have been a spark in him which brought in the zeal of being fit and healthy.

Imagination can grow wings if you try to find a story behind everything. Friends, in free time if you involve in this thinking exercise, it is really enjoyable. Believe me, looking at things from a different perspective is real fun and my article is also a brainchild of my new way of thinking..my new vision…!

On Saturday, 24th October, we had our Parent Mentor Meet for the month of October. This time we had our Chairman Sujit Bhattacharyya with us. Sujit gave the parents an update of the latest developments for Indus World School, Indore. This update included the new campus coming up at Jhalaria and also the Career Development Cell that would be operational from November 2009. He urged parents, the friends of Indus, to spread their happiness by sharing their experiences since becoming a part of the Indus family.
Parents of children studying in classes Nursery to Class II participated in a creative writing activity. We will have some of their writings on our blog soon!

A joyful celebration of Diwali brought the whole school together on 14th October. In a short skit, Class V depicted Rama's return to Ayodhya. Songs, poems and words of the young ones added to the gaiety of the gathering. Class VIII urged all friends to have a 'clean and crackerless Diwali'.

May the festival of lights fill our life with cheer and inspire us on the path of peace and goodwill towards all.

Neev: The Foundation

"Mam, I am glad you brought us here. This feeling is more fulfilling to me than the fireworks back home every Diwali”, said Susmit with a gratifying smile on his face. After all he and his classmates were not there for yet another field trip ! The visit to ‘Neev’, the school for the underprivileged or ‘children of beggars’ to put it bluntly, was aimed at making our children realize the good things that God has bestowed upon them which they often fail doing !

Vyom and Raunak are busy making streamers and putting them across the cracked walls. Harshit and Abhyuday are in a minor spat following a snide remark from some corner,completely oblivious of the fact that the children at Neev are gaping at them!

This classroom was an assortment of sorts since the age groups were strange. One could see a toddler sitting on a ten year old’s lap and beaming away a radiant smile to everyone present there. And you thought learning requires infrastructure…….?

Vivan, as usual is busy interviewing the teachers present there to tally the learning ideology with our own philosophy and analyzing the situation. Shivam finds a cozy corner and his fingers are working magic with paper as he flings the paper streamers into the air! Prachit and his group are doling out sweets and crayons to children while Vishruti exults after capturing these fine moments on her camera which is the most prized possession on earth, for her, at this point in time!

I was indeed amazed to see the amount of self-discipline these slum children displayed. They could wait for their turn and exercise restrain for everything that was being offered to them. Or was the situation a contrived one which ceased to exist once we were gone. Well, whatever the case may be, it surely did put a few of our brats to shame!

The scene at the blackboard was funny. Shweta, Mishi and Varsha are giving vent to their creative expressions as they urge these kids to copy on their cards the images of Lord Ganesha that they had managed to sketch. The feeling of oneness was all prevalent in the air. “God bless this moment”, I said to myself!

Kirti and Meet are all smiles to see the group taking interest in everything and still staying closer to the ground. Saaheb expresses his feelings of empathy over the conditions of slum dwellers to all the staff present there. “Mam, Saaheb is being politically correct”. Pat came the remark from Parth and Yaman. I couldn’t help smiling. It was time to return to school. Rajat and Yash were reluctant to board the bus as they seemed enthused.

Having facilitated such a visit on the occasion of Diwali did help the children understand the lives of such poor families who struggle to make both ends meet. The bus moves and a loud chorus can be heard singing, “Yooheen kat jayega safar saath chalne se”..! I join them heartily, realizing the importance of this worthwhile ‘educational’ trip!

Who is greater?

Many children were waiting for their turn. I was scribbling numbers on their slate and they were suppose to put <> sign in the given box. I could feel the restiveness amongst the children standing at the tail of the queue. Ishaan was most restless amongst all and must be thinking for some remedy and observing minutely. Suddenly he jumped in-front of me and said ‘ मेम मैंने सब कर लिया है, आप सिर्फ़ एक नम्बर लिख कर स्लेट अपने पास रख लो’. I surprisingly looked at him and took his slate and I was pleasantly surprised to notice his keen observation that numbers up to 10 were given and on his slate he had written. …< 10 and asked me to fill the gap and keep the slate. It was a pleasant surprise to watch children modifying their behavior and needs as per the situation.

Durgotsav and Dussehra delight

26th September was a colourful and much enjoyed day as we celebrated Navratri and Dussehra in school. Children of classes III to VIII came dressed in lehengas, kurtas and pyjamas. Children from each class performed garba. The well-coordinated dances showed the efforts that went behind the preparation. The mentors and the non-academic staff couldn't hold themselves back for long and soon joined us. Class VI students Raghavendra, Tushita, Divya and Shrey anchored the programme and also shared information about Navratri and Dussehra.

After a break for snacks, we collected again for Dussehra celebration. Students of class V, Vishnu sir and Baghel sir had made the 'Ravan'. This Ravan was a symbol of all bad qualities that we wanted to burn away. So, on strips of paper we wrote the bad qualities that we wanted to rid ourselves of and stuck the strips on Ravan. As the Ravan was set afire, the strips with our bad qualities also turned to ashes. The message this Dussehra was that of victory of good over evil.

An educational visit to a textile industry

The students of grade VI, VII and VIII went for industrial visit to Prem Textiles and Samariya Fashions. The objective of the visit was to view the processing of raw cotton to fabric. The visit was divided into 2 phases. Mr. N.K Jain, General Manager of Samariya Textiles guided our students through the entire process.

In the first session, which was on 8th September 2009, students visited the Spinning Mill(Prem Textiles). Our children perceived the process of fibre getting converted to yarn in different stages of cleaning, mixing(in Blowroom Line), carding where the fibre sheet is converted to sliver(loose yarn), drawing in Drawframe and then finally roving getting converted to yarn in the Rotar machine. They asked queries related to the pollution due to fibre floating all over and health effect on the workers. The temperature and humidity effect on the yarn and fibre also took them by surprise.

In the second session on 16th September 09, the students were taken to Weaving Mill (Samariya Fashions) where they minutely observed the auto looms and understood the process of warp and weft interweaving, which resulted in the greige fabric. They could also understand some technical part as the designing of the fabric, selvedge and the fabric checking and its parameters. The children also witnessed the faults being amended and some tried their hands on it.

The new face of Indus World School, Indore!

It is going to be two months now that we have shifted location from Sai Kripa colony to Chhawani, which is a centrally located area in Indore.

Being centrally located it is nearly equidistant from all corners of the city. The building, which we took over from the Kamala Nehru Trust, is 50 year old and is magnificent! High roofs and well-lighted, cross-ventilated rooms. – Good space that we wanted for our children! Mentors were generally happy to see the big rooms and the corners there in for setting up activities.

This is a bigger place – two acres. Tennis court and basketball court are being constructed. Behind the building there is open area to play. We have set up our adventure zone and sand pit there. Trees have been used for making rope swings.

The renovation work started in May. Complete flooring has been changed, walls are given bright colors. Inside the class one wall is brightly colored which makes the class very inviting. The corridors and the facade is a combination of bright white and grey. Tree plantation and grass laying is going on. One of our parents helped us to plant trees outside the school boundary wall.

As the children rushed in on the first day – this place came alive! The change of place made a small difference to them. They were looking for familiar faces and their mentors. The younger lot was happy with the new place. The Jigyasa group children had small questions.

The first month went by in orientation of children and working on their baselines. It normally takes some time for children to get adjusted to a new class, new mentor and some new friends in the class. In a non threatening and caring environment children adjust faster and so we saw that within 15 days it did not seem to be new place.

The first meeting with the parents was on 1st of Aug. Sujit, our Chairman, had come down for this to generally interact with the parents. The initial strain of shifting to a new location, which some parents had reflected, seemed to be fading. An exhibition cum sale of Rakhees made by visually challenged children was arranged in the school. We received some valuable feedback from the parents.

A colourful programme marked our first Independence Day in the new campus as we remembered our martyrs and reaffirmed our allegiance to our nation.
August also saw the Math Week. Puzzles, games, magic in the class and on the field had the children hooked for a week. Children still talk about the Math Treasure Hunt and the Math Fair.

A much loved event happened today when children expressed their affection for their mentors. The Teachers' Day celebration was almost completely managed by the class VIII students. The couplets that they wrote not only aptly described each mentor, they also were a mark of the esteem that the children held in their hearts for their mentors.

So much more has happened in these two months. Each day holds its own excitement and learning. Yet, it only seems like yesterday that we had begun this new session.

Now we need to find out ways of influencing this community of people who are living around our school. In my initial discussions about this with our trustee, Suresh Agarwal, it seemed to be a tough task; but I think it is not impossible.

I always believed and shared it also with our mentors that it is our own positivity that makes a place vibrant and gives that happy feeling! I do not know what the role of vastu in it is, but I know that we play the most important role!
